Mo Yan's Nobel Prize in Literature soon aroused public curiosity of the 57-year-old Chinese writer: Why was it he that was favored by the Swedish Academy? Chinese media seemed to be 36  as some journalists were reported to be on their way overnight to Gaomi City, Shandong, Mo's 37  where he stayed with his family.
Born in 1955 into a rural family, Mo 38    out of school and became a farmer when he was a(n) 39. He joined the military and devoted himself to 40 after Chinese literary circles started rethinking deeply the Cultural Revolution.
Mo's novel "Big Breasts & Wide Hips" tells a story of a mother who struggled and suffered 41  and tangled (缠结的) fates with Chinese people in the 20th century. His more recent work "Frog" more directly 42 China's one-child family policy, which helped 43 the country's population explosion 44 brought tragedies to farmers in the past 60 years.
"I think the reason why I could win  the  45    is that my works present lives with unique Chinese 46 , and they also tell stories from a viewpoint of  47  human beings, which goes beyond differences of nations and races," Mo said to Chinese journalists. Mo also said many 48 arts originated from his hometown, such as clay sculpture, paper cuts, traditional new-year paintings, have 49 and influenced his novels.
Mo's prize may give powerful encouragement to the country's writers as the more 50 of Chinese lives their works are, the more possible they 51 as a world literature.
As the world's fast-developing country with a long history, China will 52 meet conflicts with western civilizations.__53_, the country faces internally a wide gap between the rich and the poor, 54 environment pollution and an aging population. Paying more attention to such 55 , Chinese writers may create more works that record the nation's journey to rejuvenation(复兴).With more Chinese writers like Mo, the world could learn a more real China. Perhaps, this is another reason for the Swedish Academy's choice. (words:338)

With his game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, Jeremy Lin (林书豪) finished the New York Knicks' dramatic reversed victory to defeat the Toronto Rapters.
The Knicks have won six games in a row, and Jeremy Lin has put up impressive numbers during the continuous period of competitions. Although the season is still young, the Knicks have reversed course in just one week from the NBA's most disappointing team to a playoff (季后赛) contestant. Lin, not team's high-paid stars, has saved the Knicks season and likely coach D'Antoni's job.
After nearly 15 years of disappointing, sometimes unsuccessful seasons, Madison Square Garden is alive again, and New York City can't stop talking about the Knicks. To put things into perspective, consider this: Just several years back, Knicks fans protested nightly outside of the Garden calling for the team's ownership to fire their resented coach Isiah Thomas.
Now, Madison Square Garden Co. shares are at a record high, the Knicks' average household television rating is up 70 percent since Lin joined the starting lineup (首发阵容), and jersey sales are increasing very quickly. I watched the Knicks-Lakers game at a bar in Harlem, and have not felt that kind of energy from fans since the great playoff between the Knicks and Miami Heat in the late 1990s.
Beyond the Knicks, Lin may be saving the NBA as well. Just a few months back, the NBA took a massive credibility hit during a multi-month lockout, where the owners did not allow the players to go back to play until they accept the new salary levels. As a consequence, the season did not even begin until Christmas Day. Over the past few years, LeBron James' (勒布朗﹒詹姆斯) relatively long and unpleasant free-agent (自由职业球员) events, combined with poor play around the league, have angered fans and damaged the league's brand.
Lin is leading a one-week NBA basketball revival. His legendary story has inspired Asian-Americans, increased NBA sales in China, and turned the basketball world upside down.
(words:348)

A.The NBA B.Coach Isiah Thomas
C.The Knicks D.Madison Square Garden Co.’s shares

The underlined word “young” in Paragraph 2 probably means "______"

A.not old yet. B.not completely grown. C.in the development D.in the early stage

The NBA suffered the credibility crisis months ago because____

B.the NBA was disappointed at James’ free-agent event.
C.The NBA canceled the basketball match for the coming Christmas
D.James had a bad performance in the basketball court

Which one of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.These Knicks’ stars who were paid well saved the Knicks season
B.The Knicks didn’t satisfy its fans for nearly 15 years until this season
C.The fans objected to dismissing Coach Isiah Thomas outside the Garden
D.The owners and the players didn’t agree on raising the TV ratings

The passage is mainly about______

A.why the New Yorkers thought well of Jeremy Lin
B.why Jeremy Lin became a member of the Knicks
C.how the Knicks defeated its opponents in a great playoff
D.how Jeremy Lin saved the Knicks, probably including the NBA

Recently, some concerns have been raised about the health of the world's banana plants. Many media reports have said that bananas may completely disappear in the coming ten years.
Bananas are one of the world's most important food crops. They are also the fourth most valuable export. Bananas do not grow from seeds. Instead, they grow from existing plants. Bananas are threatened by disease because all the plants on a farm are copies of each other. They all share the same genetic weaknesses.
For example, the Cavendish banana is most popular in American markets. It is an important export crop. However, some kinds of fungus (真菌) organisms easily infect the Cavendish. Black Sigatoka disease affects the leaves of Cavendish banana plants. The disease is controlled on large farms by putting chemicals on the plant's leaves. Farmers put anti-fungal chemicals on their crops up to once a week.
Another fungal disease is more serious. Panama disease attacks the roots of the banana plant. There is no chemical treatment for this disease. Infected plants must be destroyed. Panama disease has affected crops in Southeast Asia, Australia and South Africa. There is concern that it may spread to bananas grown in the Americas. This could threaten an important export product for Central and South America.
The International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain, whose headquarter lies in France, supports research on bananas. The group says that more research must be done to develop improved kinds of bananas.
The group says that fungal diseases mainly affect only one kind of banana. In fact, there are five-hundred different kinds of bananas. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says the Cavendish banana represents only ten percent of world production.
The UN agency says farmers should grow different kinds of bananas. This protects against diseases that affect only one kind. Experts warn that disease may cause the Cavendish banana to disappear. This has already happened to one popular banana because of its genetic weakness against disease. (words: 335)
What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.Bananas are the world’s most important food crops.
B.There are five hundred different kinds of bananas.
C.The risk to a popular banana shows need to grow other kinds.
D.How to grow bananas in different countries.

Bananas are threatened by diseases because __________.

A.they have genetic weaknesses against disease.
B.they are one of the most valuable exports.
C.the only way to prevent it is to put chemicals on their leaves.
D.they grow from the seed

Panama disease__________.

A.doesn’t belong to fungal disease.
B.has spread to bananas in the world.
C.affects the leaves of banana plants.
D.destroys the bananas more seriously than Black Sigatoka disease.

We can infer from Paragraph 6 that ____________.

A.the center of the group is in the US.
B.the key to solving the disease is to research all kinds of bananas.
C.the Cavendish banana covers only a small part of the output of bananas.
D.each fungal disease affects five hundred different kinds of bananas.

According to the passage, which information is right?

A.The Cavendish banana can be mainly imported from North America and Europe.
B.Fungal diseases mainly affect the Cavendish banana.
C.The Cavendish banana won’t die out in the future.
D.Panama disease affects the leaves of banana plants.

What doomed the Titanic is well known, at least in outline. On a moonless night of April 15, 1912, the ship hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic ,with 1,500 lives lost.
A century later many people presented new theories to explain the real reason for the disaster. Now two new studies argue that rare states of nature played major roles in the disaster.
The first says Earth’s nearness to the Moon and the Sun — a proximity not matched in more than 1,000 years — resulted in record tides that help explain why the Titanic met with so much ice, including the fatal iceberg.
Recently, a team of researchers found an apparent explanation in the heavens. They discovered that Earth had come unusually close to the Sun and Moon that winter, enhancing their gravitational pulls on the ocean and producing record tides. The rare orbits took place between December 1911 and February 1912 — about two months before the disaster came about. The researchers suggest that the high tides refloated masses of icebergs traditionally stuck along the coastlines of Labrador and Newfoundland and sent them adrift into the North Atlantic shipping lanes.
And a second, put forward by a Titanic historian from Britain, contends that the icy waters created ideal conditions for an unusual type of mirage(海市蜃楼) that hid icebergs from lookouts whose duty was to watch carefully for  danger ahead and confused a nearby ship as to the liner’s identity, delaying rescue efforts for hours.
Most people know mirages as natural phenomena caused when hot air near the Earth’s surface bends light rays upward. In a desert, the effect prompts lost travelers to mistake patches of blue sky for pools of water. But another kind of mirage occurs when cold air bends light rays downward. In that case, observers can see objects and settings far over the horizon. The images often undergo quick distortions — not unlike the wavy reflections in a funhouse mirror.
Now, scholars of the Titanic are debating these new theories. Some have different opinions on it. Over all, though, many experts are applauding the fresh perspectives.  (words:353)
The underlined word "It" in the title probably refers to _______.

A.the Titanic B.the record tide C.the cause of the disaster D.an unusual mirage

According to Theory First, what was the right chain of causes leading to the Titanic’s disaster?
① record tides’ forming and icebergs’ being refloated
② icebergs’ being drifted into the North Atlantic shipping lanes
③the Earth’s strange closing to the Sun and the Moon
④increasing of the gravitational force on the ocean

A.①→②→③→④ B.③→④→①→② C.④→③→②→① D.②→③→④→①

According to Theory Second, the disaster happened to the Titanic mainly because______.

A.the freezing weather made the watcher not be able to watch clear
B.the mirage on the sea attracted the watcher and made him forget his work
C.the high tides drove the icebergs float so fast that the watcher didn’t respond to them
D.the mirage made the watcher not find icebergs and a nearby ship delay rescuing

What is the chief function of the sixth paragraph?

A.to infer the possibility of the mirage appearing
B.to explain to the readers the ways of the mirage forming
C.to summarize the various kinds of the mirage
D.to analyze the conditions of the mirage arising

This passage is organized generally in the pattern of________.

A.comparison and contrast B.time and events
C.conclusion and proof D.definition and classification(分类))
